its to stop shards hitting you when you ignite a bomb

so im gonna sugest this, be as safe as you can, safety goggles etc.. use a sheet of wood, a sheet of steel or galvanised sheet metal, some canvas - the tarp off a truck maybe ?
use all of them, the more the better
just a suggestion
*shrugs*

Since I've had my share of accidently detonating potato guns, I've learned a bit to protect myself. First: Denim is VERY good against plastic shard fragmentation! Get a pair of jeans and cut the legs off, duct-taping the tube-shaped material to the chamber and barrel. As a "Flak Jacket" denim is also a good material. Use a combination of 1/8" sheet metal wrapped in dual layers of Denim to create the front "blast plate" (get an old denim jacket and stitch in the sheets). This kind of protection is usually not needed, and I only use it when field testing a new gun and determining actual terminal pressures for the joints (theoretical ones are usally higher). Good Luck!

I was thinking of maybe putting a bigger pipe over the combustion chamber...like .5 in bigger that will work better than any tape and it won't be able to blow up 2 pipes...

I would go to my local army surplus store and by the military spec. tape, that stuff could hold a howitzer together while firing. I use a a few thick bands of it down the length of the chamber no more than 2 1/2" apart it has probably saved me some trips in the meat wagon
