I have a slightly smaller barrel, and I've found carrots to be good. Also small potatoes that will fit in the barrel without much cutting are very good. Check if any size batteries will fit, if not use wadding. I haven't tried beetroot, but I think they'll work quite good, and leave a nice purple mark too. Candles are good if you can find a kind that fits.
Darts should fit nicely in your pipe with some wadding, maybe a spud behind it. They *will* get stuck however, so have a pair of pliers at hand...
Ball bearings are fun and extrmely destructive if you can find the right size.
Dry, fine dirt in front of a spud makes an impressive dust cloud. Water in front of a tight seal works too, just keep in mind that it's heavy and will kick hard. If you use too much you might even blow up your gun.
